Where can I find a cake show or convention?

September 26, 2010

Hello all!

A reader recently requested information about cake shows or convention, as she was interested in attending one.  It occurred to us that there might be more people out there seeking that same information, so here we go!

This past year, we attended the National Capital Area Cake Show in Fairfax, Virginia.  (See our page on “Cake Shows” for information and pictures.)  It was the experience of a lifetime!  We met so many cake stars, attended classes, saw wonderful cake creations, and shopped till we dropped.  This year’s show will be held March 26 & 27 2011 at the Northern Virginia Community College Annandale Campus in Annandale, Virginia. There will be cake competitions, classes, live cake challenges by famous cake designers (as seen on TV), and lots of specialty vendors and demonstrations, too. We are definitely attending and might even submit a cake into the competition!  Go to www.cakeshow.org/ to get more info and register.  As members of ICES, we can register at a discounted rate.  (See below for more information on ICES.)

Christina and her daughter at the 2010 NCACS with Anne Heap of "Pink Cake Box"...our favorite decorator and fellow Jersey girl. Christina was super excited to meet her! 🙂

Another show we attended was the Great American Cake Show, which this year is on April 30th and May 1st 2011. It is held at the Shipley Arena, of the Carroll County Agriculture Center in Westminster, Maryland. It’s a smaller show than the NCACS but nice nonetheless. You can go to their site for more info: www.greatamericancakeshow.com/aboutus.html.

Both of these shows are sponsored by ICES, so a word about them.  The International Cake Exploration Societé (ICES) sponsors most of these types of shows. ICES is a “not-for-profit” organization that “promotes and provides opportunities for continuing education, development of future sugar artists, and enjoyment of the art form in a sharing environment.” For more information about ICES, about other upcoming events in your area, and to become a member, go to www.ices.org.  As a member, you receive information about their annual convention & show, local sharing events, a monthly newsletter and so much more.  It’s really worth the $60 annual dues.

Speaking of their newsletter, we just received our October copy yesterday, and for those of you in the tri-state area looking for a cake show fix sooner than March, the White Rose Cake Decorators will hold their 32nd Annual Cake Competition and Live Challenge on Saturday, November 6 in York, PA.  The PA Chapter of ICES will sponsor this event, so for more information and registration forms, contact Sheila Miller, 28 Fake Hollow Road, York, PA 17406, phone and fax 717-252-1191, or e-mail SheilasCakery@ comcast.net.

Finally, on March 20, 2011, there is an event called “A Day with Buddy Valastro” as seen on TLC’s “Cake Boss”.  There will be two demonstrations, lunch, and an autograph signing.  This event will be held at the Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach, VA.  For ticket information, please visit their website at wineandcake.com.

Hope this information is useful and, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

Happy baking!

Christina & Meghan
