Exhaustion + Being overwhelmed = Cake wreck

April 21, 2010

We had a last minute request to make a cake for a woman who is a member of the Red Hat Society and who likes the colors black, white, and yellow.  We quickly came up with a fun concept and executed it amidst working on a communion cake as well as a myriad of other things.

Our first attempt was what we’d call a cake wreck in our world:  lopsided, wavy, and just plain bad.  We took it to our colleagues who had no problem gobbling it up since it was yummy, as usual.

The first attempt...yikes!!!!

After having a hissy fit of massive proportions, we got back to work (luckily the hat itself was fine, made of cereal treats and covered in fondant).  Our second attempt was a completely different design (we couldn’t even think about doing the same design again!) and worked so much better, although it is safe to say that this was not our favorite creation just based on all of the issues we encountered:  humidity, insufficient red fondant and confectioner’s sugar for the buttercream…need we say more???

The final result! Phew!

We are glad to put this one behind us and move on to our next project, which is top secret…for now!

Happy baking!
