Follow-up: Spongebob Birthday Cakes on Food Network Challenge

April 12, 2010

We had a request from a reader to post a video of the Food Network Challenge Spongebob Birthday Cakes Episode (Season 10, Episode 6 which aired on Sunday April 4th, 2010).  Unfortunately, Food Network does not post their episodes online so we cannot do that, but…we can tell you who won and show you pics of the finished cakes!

Each contestant was assigned a character from the Spongebob cartoon show and asked to make a cake using that character while also incorporating their location in Bikini Bottom and Spongebob himself.  The cake was for a 7-year old Spongbob fan.

Rick Reichart of CakeLava in Hawaii was the lucky contestant to get Spongebob as his character.  Here is his final cake.  It was amazing and he was our favored to win just based on his reputation and his skills.  His cake carving was phenomenal!

Bronwen Weber of Frosted Art Bakery & Studio in Dallas, Texas made a cake of Patrick Star.  Her cake represented Patrick and Spongebob jellyfishing in Jellyfish Acres.

For the first time, Kristen Davison worked with Richard Ruskell (rather than vice versa) for her 6th Food Network Challenge on a Sandy Cheeks cake.  We were amazed to watch them create Sandy’s glass dome habitat and helmet from sugar!

The winner of this challenge, however, was also one of our favorite cake decorators:  Lauren Kitchens of Fancy Cakes by Lauren.  Lauren was asked to do a cake of Mr. Krabs and she absolutely outdid herself in her carving, detail, and representation of theme.  We could almost hear Mr. Krabs saying “Argh!”

The detail on Lauren's cake was amazing. (picture courtesy of http://fancycakesbylauren.blogspot.com/)

Hope this was helpful.  If we find a video that is posted legally online, we will post it here.

Happy baking!

I actually met Mike McCarey back in March at the National Capital Area Cake show in Fairfax, VA. He was a judge for a live cake challenge that was going on. Check out the “Cake Celebrity Pictures” page for a picture of my oldest daughter and me with Mike. I also got his autograph and a link to his site in in our “Favorite Links” section. Maybe if I come out to visit you, I can go visit his shop! 🙂
